About Maternity Homes
Maternity homes provide housing for pregnant women/girls who are at risk of abuse or becoming homelessness.
Unlike emergency shelters, which provide brief respite for a few days or perhaps several weeks, maternity home
residents are expected to stay for months at a time. They are sometimes dorm-like residences or they may be
converted homes with a family like atmosphere. I have even seen some that have taken over apartment buildings
for this purpose, giving the moms more privacy.
These homes typically offer a wide range of services for women in need, anywhere from counseling services,
parenting classes to adoption guidance and job training. Staff and volunteers often assist the mothers with
the process of applying for state-funded aide and other available public assistance.
Most often they offer:
Housing
Food
Transportation
Counseling and education
Assistance applying for financial aid
Pregnancy Homes directly contradict the claim that pro-lifers only care about babies at the
expense of their often desperate, impoverished, or otherwise struggling mothers. The truth is that babies thrive
when their mothers thrive, and pregnancy homes help set women and their children on a path for success.
